QUEEN ISABELLA I (SPAIN) - MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT SIGNED 11/25/1501 . QUEEN ISABELLA I. Manuscript DS: "Yo la Reyna" ("I the Queen"), 1p, 11¾x16. 1501 November 25. In old Spanish, not translated. Queen Isabella I (1451-1504) and King Ferdinand V (1452-1516) jointly ruled Spain from 1479-1504). Rulers of Spain did not sign their names; they signed "I the Queen" or "I the King". On August 23, 1500, a year before Queen Isabella signed this document, Columbus and his brothers were arrested in Santo Domingo and sent home in chains. Columbus's titles of Governor and Viceroy were removed by royal decree. Columbus refused to have the chains removed until the monarchs themselves issued the order to do so. He arrived in Cádiz in November 1500. Upon hearing of Columbus's plight, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand immediately ordered the chains removed and he and his brothers freed. With his titles annulled, the former Governor spent the next two years in despair and humiliation. On May 11, 1502, less than six months after the Queen signed this document, Columbus made his fourth and last expedition to the New World. He sailed to Mexico, Honduras, Panama and Santiago and landed on the South American mainland. Queen Isabella was also a patron of scholars and artists, establishing educational institutions and building a large collection of art works. She learned Latin as an adult, was widely read, and educated not only her sons but her daughters. One of these daughters, Catherine of Aragon, was the first wife of King Henry VIII of England and mother of Queen Mary I of England. Fragile, worn. Sporadically...
